Story of Connection and Growth: A Tree We Love
At the Early Learning Coalition (ELC), we recognize that nurturing children's social-emotional skills is as essential as their academic growth. Our Behavior Specialist, Jennifer Bragdon, has taken this to heart with her new scripted story, A Tree We Love. This story goes beyond words on a page—it’s a carefully crafted tool designed to foster empathy, mindfulness, and a sense of connection among young learners.
The Inspiration Behind A Tree We Love
Jennifer Bragdon, one of our dedicated Behavior Specialists at ELC, has always understood that children learn best when they feel connected to their surroundings and the people around them. A Tree We Love was inspired by her observation of children's curiosity about nature and their desire to explore. Jennifer wanted to create a story that would offer children a space to learn not only about nature but about themselves and their relationships with each other.
A Story That Teaches Mindfulness and Connection
In A Tree We Love, Jennifer introduces young children to a special tree that stands tall in the middle of a bustling playground. Through guided language and engaging dialogue, children learn to observe the tree’s branches, leaves, and roots, discovering how each part has its own role in keeping the tree strong and grounded. This metaphor is a gentle reminder of how each child’s unique qualities contribute to the group’s overall harmony.
Jennifer’s story also integrates mindfulness practices in a way that’s accessible and enjoyable for young learners. As they listen, children are invited to imagine themselves as parts of the tree—rooted, sturdy, and resilient. This approach encourages kids to build self-awareness and appreciate their role in the “forest” of friends and family around them.
Using Scripted Stories to Support Social-Emotional Learning
Scripted stories like A Tree We Love are vital tools in behavior support, especially for young children who may need guidance in understanding their emotions and behaviors. By walking children through scenarios encouraging empathy and understanding, Jennifer helps create an environment where children can thrive emotionally and intellectually.
At ELC, we believe in the power of stories to bridge gaps and teach lessons in memorable and meaningful ways. Jennifer’s A Tree We Love is an exceptional example of this mission in action. Through this story, children learn about nature and themselves and the importance of kindness, patience, and resilience.
Bringing A Tree We Love Into the Classroom
Jennifer Bragdon’s story is more than a tool; it’s an experience that teachers and students alike can share. A Tree We Love will soon be introduced into classrooms across ELC, which will help spark meaningful conversations and inspire new perspectives. We proudly celebrate Jennifer’s work and look forward to seeing how her story touches our children's lives.
By blending creativity with expertise, Jennifer has created a story that our students—and all who hear it—can carry with them as a reminder of their potential to grow, connect, and flourish, just like the tree they love.
